Last week we began looking at answering the question, “What is your only comfort in life and death?” The wonderful way that the answer begins is with the simple statement ”that I am not my own”.
To be a Christian is to no longer claim possession of yourself. It is to recognise that Jesus paid the price for you and so now you belong to him. The world that we live in would point to this statement and call Jesus oppressive, an enemy to my ability to find fulfilment and meaning.
Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.
1 Corinthians 6:19-20 ESV
But for the Christian, these words are a great comfort because they teach us that our lives are not up to us. I know that my best day is filled with ups and downs. If my meaning and comfort have to come from me, then my meaning and comfort will wax and wane. They will not be there when I need them, for when I am at my wits end I am least able to save myself.
No, it is a great thing indeed to belong with body and soul to Jesus. For your standing with him never changes. Once he has set his affections on you, once he has joined you to himself, you can never be truly, ultimately lost. Though your daily experience of his nearness may change, he is there, faithful to the very end, ready and willing to forgive.
Be encouraged this week as you consider this wonderful truth.
Coming Up
Prayer meeting
We’ll be continuing our study on The Lord’s Prayer on Tuesday evening as we “gather” to pray together on Zoom. Email Pastor Dan for the Zoom link.
Baptism Sunday, 25 May
It’s very exciting to announce that we will be holding a baptism service for All Together Sunday this month! Please be praying for those who will be baptised, that the Lord would sustain their faith and cause them to continue to grow in grace and godliness.
Stage N Slam
YoungLife Greenock will be hosting Stage N Slam again at the Mount Kirk from June 24-27. This a great event, one which has led to more than one profession of faith. There are two ways that we can serve as a church:
Feeding the team
As a church, we will be providing a meal for the team on Friday, 27 June. Please speak with Janice(or reply to this email) to let us know if you can help.
Hosting the team
The team are also looking for host homes to provide a place for members of the team to stay while they are in Scotland. Hosts are asked to provide accommodation for 2 or more of the visiting team, preferably in beds so that the team are properly rested each night. The team are expected to arrive on Sunday 22 June 2025 and depart on Sunday 29 June. These dates will be confirmed nearer the time. If you would like to serve the team in this way, please get in touch with Pastor Dan for more information.
