The song of the fiery serpents

Above him stood the seraphim. Each had six wings: with two he covered his face, and with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. And one called to another and said:
“Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts;
the whole earth is full of his glory!”1

Isaiah 6:2-3

The first thing that Isaiah notices after he sees the Lord sitting upon the throne is that the Lord is being worshipped.

Worshipped then

The seraphim, these strange, fiery winged serpents (for that is what seraphim means) echo together of the three-times-holiness of God. Note, however, that these sinless beings cannot bear to look upon the Lord. They shield their eyes. And so 700 years before the arrival of Jesus, God is worshipped.

Worshipped now

And so we join in their song. As noted last week, we begin our time of worship with a reading of God’s word. This is a real revelation of him because his words come from him. And the only right response to the revelation of God is adoration. It is to join together in songs of praise to our Lord and Saviour. It is to live and work in such a way that God is glorified (see 1 Corinthians 10:31). This is adoration, to glorify God for who he is. And it continues on and on.

Worshipped forever

In Revelation 4:1-8, John the Evangelist has a vision very similar to that of Isaiah. There, the seraphim’s song is sung by otherworldly living creatures. There, the elders proclaim that the Lord is worthy for he is the Creator and Sustainer of all things.

When we respond to our Maker, Defender, Redeemer, and Friend with adoration, we experience a foretaste of eternity. All of God’s people gathered together to praise him in all that we do forever and ever.

Notices

Please join us on Saturday, 6 September at 5pm for the commissioning and ordination of Pastor Dan to continued ministry here at Ardgowan. This will be a time of celebration, looking back at the church’s history so far and looking forward to see how God will continue to work in us and through us.

This week, we also begin our new midweek evening program.

On Tuesdays, we meet on Zoom to pray together as normal.

On Thursday, 4 September at 7pm, The Journey finally begins. We’ll be spending the first seven weeks going through the Life Explored course. Here’s the course summarised in a sentence:

Life Explored offers the opportunity to consider questions that help us understand our search for fulfilment, and Jesus’s offer of life in all its fullness.

If you know someone aged anywhere between 18-30s, send them our digital flyer. It’s an easy way of sending a direct invitation.
