At worship yesterday, we continued our series looking at the opening verses of John’s gospel. This time, as Douglas took us through John 1:4, he made one particular point that is so helpful when we consider who God is.
We’ve been reminder of the wonder of who the Lord Jesus is… Some of the thoughts that we’ve had in these verses have stretched our minds a bit. We struggle to understand and take in what John is saying here. And you know, that’s no bad thing.
At Advent, it might feel like we are constantly reaching for words like wonder, awe, or amazement. The reason for this is simple: the Incarnation of the Lord Jesus Christ is an event which exceeds our abilities to form full, comprehensive thoughts. It is an event which is unique, in the truest sense of the word. It is without analogy, without equal.
As we get older, we have a tendency to lose our sense of wonder. Experience tells us that we know what is coming, that we’ve seen it all before.
This Advent, I would encourage you to fight against that tendency. As Christians in the world, we are swimming against the tide of culture. Let us not become disenchanted with our Saviour.
For, at this time of year, we celebrate the one who, even as he lay sleeping in the manger, upheld the universe by his powerful word(Heb. 1:3). We celebrate the one who brought life even as he gave up his own for us(John 10:11). We celebrate the good news which angels longed to see take place(1 Pet. 1:12).

As you’ll know by now, due to the weather, we had to cancel our Blue Christmas service. Even so, let us continue to pray for those we know who are struggling this Christmas. If you are able, reach out to them and perhaps offer a listening ear. If you’re given the opportunity, say good things about Jesus to them.
Coming up, our final Sunday of Advent will be on 21 December. We’ll be finishing up our series on John 1:1-5.
We will have our annual Christmas Eve Carols service at 7pm and a brief Christmas Day service at 11am. Be praying for all of the preparations that are going into these events but pray also that new people would be drawn to Jesus through our work together as a church.
In January, we will also be launching Life Explored. There will be more about that over the next week or two.
