When we come together to worship, we begin our time with a reading from the Psalms. This can be considered a call to worship, but it is particularly a call to worship the one true God.
In the year that King Uzziah died I saw the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up; and the train of his robe filled the temple. (Isaiah 6:1)
As Isaiah found himself in the temple, he was given a grand vision of the Lord. The king had died but the King was still on the throne. And this King is so great that the temple can only contain the train, or hem, of his robe.
When we gather to worship, we start with God’s word because we want to direct our worship to God alone. He calls us to worship as he reveals himself in Scripture.
But who is it that Isaiah sees? It must necessarily be the pre-incarnate Son. For no one can see the Father or the Spirit. But we know that we see God when we see Jesus. John the Evangelist makes this very point as he references Isaiah’s vision of the Lord in John 12:41.
Isaiah saw the pre-incarnate Jesus and we “see” him as we come to the word.
