Reading Scripture

One of the things that I think is helpful for everyone is to spend time simply reading and listening to Scripture together. When we do this, we find solidarity with our brothers and sisters throughout the vast majority of church history. In order to have access to God’s word, one had to go to a place to hear God’s word being read out.

We can see this playing out in Scripture itself. While Moses did indeed write Deuteronomy, he also read it out to the nation. Then it was read out for people and then explained by Ezra the Scribe in Nehemiah 8.

The entire rabbinic tradition was one in which rabbis would read out Scripture to their disciples and then comment on Scripture. It is into that tradition that Jesus gave what we know as the Sermon On The Mount.

Over the next three Tuesdays, during our prayer meeting, we will be reading out the sermon, which is found in Matthew 5-7. For now, we will focus on reading it and then praying in response to what the Lord says in his word.

Notices

Coming up, we have back-to-back All Together Sunday happening. On 29 March, we’ll be looking at what God says about faith and how we are saved by faith alone. Then on 5 April, which is Resurrection Day, we will celebrate the resurrection of Jesus as we learn about what it means to live for God’s glory alone. These services are a great opportunity to invite friends and family and those with children as we all learn together.

It is only March, but preparations and plans are already under way for Stage N Slam, which is an annual, week-long event hosted by YoungLife Greenock. This is a great opportunity to partner with other, like-minded churches in the area to reach the young people in our town with the good news of Jesus.

Last year, the event was offered completely free of charge and this was made possible by the support of local churches and Christians. There will be more info about how to give toward this work on Sunday.
