This week, we’re continuing our way through the Apostles’ Creed and move from confessing God the Father to God the Son.
I believe in God the Father… and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord,
Words get misused all the time. People will talk about literally doing things when they mean metaphorically. But no word gets misused quite like unique. It’s a word that’s treated like a spectrum, where there are varying degrees of “uniqueness”. Something might be described “really unique” or “so unique”.
Except, unique isn’t a spectrum. It describes something which is one-of-a-kind. It means that there is nothing else like it.
We live in a society which is incredibly pluralistic. People claim to have their truths, their ideas about how things should work, while also claiming that all truth is equally valid. In this setting, the claims that Jesus makes are incredibly offensive.
What we find in Scripture and in the Creed, is that the there is only one true God and there is only one way to this true God.
For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus… (1 Timothy 2:5)
It is by this, one and only, unique Son that we are saved.
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. (John 3:16)
And so if we are going to faithfully speak the truth that was once for all, delivered to the saints, we must boldly confess that we believe in Jesus Christ, the only Son of God. He alone is able to save because he alone is both God and man, two natures united together forever yet without confusion or blending or separation. He is not a God-mind inside a human body. He is Totally God, Totally Man.
Notices
Coming up this week, we are back on Tuesday for Tuesday Night Prayer. This is a great time of fellowship, discussion, and prayer together for the work of the church and the needs that arise in people’s lives.
Another reminder that we will be holding our AGM on 2 June at 7:30pm. To proceed with the meeting, we must have at least 50% of the membership present. If you are unable to attend, please get in touch with one of the church leaders via email.
What burning questions do you have? One of the things we try to do with gatherings like our prayer meeting and Discipleship Explored is to provide an opportunity to ask questions. Over the summer, we have an opportunity to do this in a more informal setting. To help with planning and preparing, you can direct questions you have to a new Google Form that we have created. Your questions are anonymous and can be about anything related to Christian living, the Bible, theology, cultural issues…
