God ordains our suffering

Something which we must all grapple with in life is the presence of suffering. We see it on the news. We hear of it on the phone with friends and loved ones. We experience it ourselves as we sit in hospital waiting rooms or examination rooms or when relationships fracture.

When it comes, we seek escape from it. We try to numb the pain or ignore the pain, looking for anything that can serve as a distraction. This starts an endless cycle between discomfort and escape. Over time, the need for escape eclipses all of our existence and we find that it is never enough.

This week, as you go about your day, consider this from Dr. JV Fesko:

God ordains our sufferings because by them he conforms us to the image of his Son, and he reveals his glory through our weakness (2 Cor. 13:9).

And so, take this prayer with you. Pray this when the day is hard. Pray this as you wait. Pray this as you work.

When I am weak, Jesus is strong.

Remembrance Sunday

When we consider the gospel, we look to Jesus who offered himself in our place so that we might have life. As we approach Remembrance Sunday, we commemorate this same picture of the gospel as we remember those who gave their lives so that we might enjoy the peace we have in this land.

HymnSing: Sing the Word

The Psalms open, appropriately, with Psalm 1.

“Blessed is the man… his delight is in the law of the LORD and on his law he meditates day and night.”

One of the tools God has given us to do this is song. And so we invite you to our next HymnSing, also on Sunday, 8 November at 4pm. We will be singing a selection of songs that help us to remember and meditate on God’s word.
